In the heart of southwestern Germany, on the edge of the picturesque Black Forest, lies Freiburg im Breisgau. It is an extremely famous city. It is known not only for its medieval city center but also for its famous Bächle. These are narrow streams that flow along the streets of the historic center and have become the city’s symbol. As you stroll through the cobblestone streets, it’s impossible not to notice these small channels of clear water that run alongside the houses, squares, and shops. The Bächle have existed since the 13th century and were built to supply water to residents, water animals, and help prevent fires. Today, they no longer serve a practical purpose, but they remain one of Freiburg’s most distinctive features. They also lend the city a refreshing atmosphere, which is particularly pleasant on hot summer days. In this article, we’ll take you on a tour through Freiburg, sharing many interesting facts about the city.

Freiburg

The Bächle

“Bächle” is a German word meaning “small streams” or “small waterways.” The term derives from “bach,” meaning stream, and the suffix “-le,” from the Alemannic dialect spoken in the Baden region. The suffix indicates a diminutive form (equivalent to the Italian “-ino” or “-etto”). During the summer, they become a gathering place for residents and tourists. It’s common to see people sitting along their banks, dipping their feet in the cool water to find some relief from the heat. Children build small wooden boats that they set adrift along the water’s course, while adults take a break in the shade of historic buildings.

The Legend

There’s also a charming local legend surrounding the Bächle. It is said that anyone who accidentally steps into one of the streams will end up marrying someone from Freiburg. Of course, this is just a folk tradition, but many visitors smile when, distracted, they actually end up with a shoe in the water.

The Cathedral

I continue my tour through Freiburg; the heart of the city is dominated by the majestic cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture built between the 13th and 16th centuries. Its tower, over 116 meters tall, is considered one of the most elegant in Europe and offers a spectacular view of the city and the Black Forest mountains. At its base, a lively market takes place almost every day, where you can buy local products, flowers, cheeses, and culinary specialties.

Sustainable Energy

Freiburg is one of Germany’s most sustainable cities. For decades, it has been investing in sustainable transportation, renewable energy, and environmental protection. The Vauban neighborhood has become an international model of sustainable urban planning, thanks to its energy-efficient homes, numerous bike paths, and limited car traffic. This commitment has earned Freiburg the nickname “Germany’s green capital.” Another interesting fact about this tour of Freiburg concerns the climate. Thanks to its sheltered location and the influence of the Rhine Valley, it is considered one of the sunniest cities in Germany, with over 1,700 hours of sunshine per year.

Why is it called the Black Forest?

The Black Forest owes its name to the dense, shady appearance of its woods. As far back as Roman times, the dense concentration of spruce and pine trees made it difficult for light to penetrate, and the forest appeared almost completely dark. The Romans called it Silva Nigra, meaning “black forest,” a name that has remained virtually unchanged over the centuries. Today, it stretches for about 160 kilometers in southwestern Germany and is one of Europe’s most famous natural areas. In addition to its hiking trails and mountainous landscapes, it is famous for having inspired many of the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales. Although not all of them are officially set here, the atmosphere of the dense woods, ancient farms, and isolated villages perfectly evokes scenes from stories like “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Snow White.”

Black Forest

Cuckoo Clocks

One of the most interesting facts is that the famous cuckoo clocks originated right here in the Black Forest. Beginning in the 17th century, local artisans began crafting wooden clocks decorated with nature-inspired motifs, turning them into one of the region’s symbols. The famous Black Forest cake, made with chocolate sponge cake, whipped cream, cherries, and kirsch, also takes its name from this area, although its origin is still a subject of debate. It is home to some of Germany’s most important springs, including those of the Danube, Europe’s second-longest river. Thanks to its glacial lakes, waterfalls, and breathtaking views, this region is now an ideal destination. We can say that you now have enough information to make sure you don’t miss out on this itinerary in Freiburg.
