If you’re looking for an unusual European destination to escape the summer heat, a trip to the Faroe Islands is the best choice. This archipelago is located in the heart of the North Atlantic. More precisely, you’ll be traveling between Iceland and Norway. This destination offers pleasant temperatures even in summer, rarely exceeding 15 °C. Here, the landscape is dominated by green mountains, cliffs plunging into the ocean, waterfalls, and small villages straight out of a fairy tale. But beyond its spectacular natural beauty, the Faroe Islands also preserve ancient legends that make every excursion more interesting than many of the most popular tourist destinations. On this itinerary through the Faroe Islands, Tourial takes you on a journey of discovery. Why not visit somewhere a little different this summer?

Faroe Islands Itinerary

Day 1

Tórshavn and Kirkjubøur

The itinerary begins in Tórshavn, one of the smallest capitals in the world. Here, you’ll find yourself strolling through the narrow streets of the historic Tinganes neighborhood. This neighborhood is characterized by its traditional wooden houses with grass-covered roofs. From here, you can drive to Kirkjubøur, the most historically significant village in the Faroe Islands, just about twenty minutes away. There you’ll find the St. Magnus Cathedral, which has remained unfinished since the Middle Ages, and the Roykstovan, one of the oldest inhabited wooden houses in the world.

The Legend of the Giants

In the afternoon, head to the overlook where you can see Risin og Kellingin, two sea stacks rising from the ocean. According to a famous local legend, they represent a giant and a witch from Iceland. They had been sent to drag the Faroe Islands away. The two worked all night, but failed in their endeavor and were caught by dawn. The sunlight turned them to stone, and to this day they continue to watch over the archipelago’s coastline.

Day 2

The Suspended Lake

The second day is dedicated to some of the Faroe Islands’ most unique landscapes. Set out early for the village of Miðvágur, the starting point for the trail leading to Lake Sørvágsvatn, also known as the “suspended lake.” After about an hour’s walk, you’ll reach the famous viewpoint where, thanks to an optical illusion, the lake appears to be suspended hundreds of meters above the ocean. In reality, the elevation difference is much smaller, but the effect is stunning. It is one of the most photographed spots in the archipelago.

The Immense Waterfalls

As you continue along the trail, you’ll reach the Bøsdalafossur waterfall, where the lake’s waters flow directly into the Atlantic. The contrast between the deep green of the hills and the deep blue of the ocean makes this one of the most beautiful places in the Faroe Islands. In the afternoon, we recommend visiting the picturesque village of Gásadalur, which remained isolated until just a few years ago. A tunnel was built specifically to finally connect it to the rest of the island. From here, you can admire the famous Múlafossur waterfall, which plunges directly into the ocean.

The Hidden People

It’s easy to see why many locals still tell stories of invisible creatures, the huldufólk, the “hidden people.” According to Nordic tradition, these beings live inside mountains and rocks, protecting nature and revealing themselves only to those who deeply respect the land. Thanks to this itinerary, it’s easy to see why: it’s impossible not to be left speechless and filled with a deep respect for these natural wonders.
